MIDDLE GRADE BOOKSTrial Basis
Who hasn’t begged a parent for a pet? But what if your parents held a trial to decide the matter – and your prissy sister was the competition?
Michael Everett can’t bear to part with the stray puppy he finds near the railroad tracks. Naming the dog Caboose (“He follows me everywhere!”), he tries to convince his lawyer parents that he is now old enough to be responsible for a pet. They decide he can keep the puppy – if he can persuade them during a family “trial.” With the help of his friends, practical Alexandra and Shakespeare-spouting Ted, Michael builds his case in the midst of Caboose’s puppy mischief and mayhem. At trial, Michael’s nerves, as well as his patience, are tested as he copes with the testimony of an assortment of wacky witnesses and the challenges of his pushy sister. But when the gavel finally falls, will it all have been worth it?
